Portia’s gift showed how deeply she loved Ellen and how much she understood Ellen. The story reminds us what love can do. Love is love. Sometimes it has nothing to do with gender. That is also what Ellen tries to express by her efforts to make LGBT understand by the mass. In 2016, Ellen was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest honor for a US civilian, for her bravery, encouragement and influence in advancing LGBT rights. The president of the day Obama spoke highly of Ellen’s courage to identify herself as a lesbian to the public 20 years ago by saying “just how important it was, not just for the LGBT community, but for all of us to see somebody so full of kindness and light, to see somebody we liked so much...challenge our own assumptions”.

Ellen’s blonde short-cut hair style is iconic, but the thing has been off the track a little recently. Ellen shared the story on her talk show. As a person with fast-growing hair, Ellen constantly has it cut and dyes it to make it light and bright. She tried a new person for her latest visit to salon, which was a normal beginning for most hair tragic stories, and decided to save time by coloring all hair rather than dark on the sides and light on top as she usually did. However, she ended up a session of two hours and forty-five minutes and the result was not good. The salon guy gave another, or maybe several other shots to restore it. Ellen said “I even could not pinpoint what color it was. It was orange, pink, and purple.” The color was not the worst part. Ellen soon realized that the repeated bleach-and-tone process was more terrified. “My hair was falling out, like literally I was touching my head and hair was falling out,” Ellen kept her sense of humor, “I think my hair was so embarrassed and they did not want anything to do with my head and said ‘I’m getting out of here’.” Ellen then showed a video that how the other two hair dressers did complicate but also awkward steps to restore her hair. “My hairdresser said I needed to shave it really short so that the color was completely out of it and I would grow new virgin hair,” the star explained, “And since I wasn’t working over the summer, that’s what I did.”
Ellen is also dedicated to charity, which explains why she burst into tears when her wife Portia announced her donation plan in name of Ellen as a birthday gift for her. In 2008, Ellen had a special edition of The Ellen DeGeneres Show to celebrate her 60 birthdays. Portia entered the show’s set and explained her plan for Ellen’s birthday. Ellen idolized Dian Fossey since she was a girl and the admiration continued to today for Dian’s efforts to protect mountain gorillas. A fund in Fossey’s name raised money to better protect the only hundreds of gorillas that are alive today and Portia donated to build an official camp called The Ellen DeGeneres Center for The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Portia also started a fund called The Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund for providing aid in the protection of animals.
Ellen started her career as an actress in early 1980s and starred in television sitcom Ellen from 1994 to 1998, during which she came out as a lesbian. The show Ellen also explored LGBT issues. In 2008, Ellen got married to her longtime girlfriend Portia and the couple were active for fighting for LGBT’s rights. Ellen gave her voice of Dory in the Pixar animated films Finding Nemo (2003) and Finding Dory (2016); for Nemo, she won the award of the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress, which was the first time an actress was awarded for a voice performance. In September 2003, Ellen launched a daytime television talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and got widespread positive feedback.

Ellen kept her natural hair until the new season The Ellen DeGeneres Show kicks off, but a producer persuaded her into going back to blond as the audience are all familiar with.
